MASTER PERCUSSIONIST VISITS SCHOOLS
Lakeshore Jazz Connection will sponsor a unique and exciting performance Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, by master percussionist Dede Sampaio. Dede will perform his "Sounds of Brazil" presentation at 9:30 in the auditorium for Saugatuck Middle school students and 10:30 for it's high school students. Then he's off to Fennville High School to do a presentation at 1:30 pm. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
Do you know what a cuica, pandeiro, surdo or berimbau are? Students at Saugatuck and Fennville schools will find out Feb. 6th when master percussionist Dede Sampaio presents his "Sounds of Brazil" in morning and afternoon programs. The growing popularity of Brazilian music and it's unique rhythms are reflected in the "Sounds of Brazil" presentation. Students will explore, learn and understand many aspects of Brazilian history, geography, customs and music. A wide variety of unique Brazilian percussion instruments will be demonstrated, played and their origins explained. Students and teachers will get the chance to participate as they create the Brazilian Carnival atmosphere using instruments.
"Dede is an exciting performer and his array of percussion seems endless," says Jim Cooper, Artistic Director of Lakeshore Jazz Connection who is sponsoring the event. "He has three performances in two schools in one day. We'll find the strongest Brazilian coffee we can and make sure he doesn't run out."
Dede Sampaio, born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and has 20 years of educational experience. He has played and/or recorded with Miles Davis, Jon Faddis, Toninho Horta, Gary Peacock, Randy Brecker, Dave Kikoski and others.
